Final Party: process

 The Final Party

In my on-going vein of expanding my portfolio
Here is the second (of 2) ideas I had for a mystery book inspired piece.
For this one I was inspired by the overt use of grim reapers I've seen on mystery books.
I enjoyed working in the 4 horeman cake pops. ;)

Edit: Added the drawing and the rough J.

How I Work: Chewbacca

Some of my preliminary work on the young Chewbacca Graphic novel.

The project started with research and working on the design of the wookies.
I did a full rotation drawing on Chewbacca and front/back notes on the others.

After reading the script I did notes directly on the script then went to the rough stage (above).PencilsInksI did a few color studies of various panels before coloring the whole book.
On the final colors I made color notes on the side (of the pure color) as I worked.

How I work: Last Unicorn

This is several of the steps I took when working on the Last Unicorn Image:

I started out with several thumbnails, which I worked up into roughs to present (sometimes my thumbnails are hard to read). Here is the Rough that was selected.
From there I went to the drawing stage (got approval) and went into inks.
For this image I had a few thoughts on where to go with colors, so I did several color studies before starting the final.
Here is a work in progress of the final image:And the final image:I painted it in Photoshop. I used several different types of brushes for a more textured feel and painted the line work to push some of it back in space and help facilitate the glow feeling.

This piece is available for a print at the POD Gallery.
And will be a pin up in the Last Unicorn comic from IDW (as of yet, I do not know which issue it will be in).

How I work: With Photoshop Layers

Here are 2 screen caps of my layer pallete in Photoshop on my working file of Jewel from Treasures. For the Bella Sara assignments we are asked to work on levels for production reasons. The left one is my normal layer settings and the right one is for the pencil layer.

work in progress: Lost- Nature witch

'Lost' Work in progress (it will be in color)

I LOVE comics (graphic novels, manga, all sorts of visual story telling) and have been working on the start of this idea (which is based off the witch pict). I decided to go with a more decorative feel for the whole piece (like the original art) and am planning the story for around 5 to 7 pages.

How I work: With color

Here are some of the in progress work on Saroena (Flight School). As I work I save several WIPs (Works in Progress) so I can look back at what I have done (and show the AD ;)
For on occasion I liked what was going on previously in the pict but worked over it; and the WIP reminds me what excited me at the start so I can make sure that makes it to the finished piece.

For this project the art brief asked for a blue pegasus with a cloud motif who was helping her young charges to fly and had 2 encouraging helpers (it was of course more specific then that ;).
I did several sketches to work out the composition, and then the finished drawing that I scanned in Photoshop. Because this is for Bella Sara I work on multiple layers (most things have thier own layer). The drawing layer is on top with the layer set to multiply.

Since the pegasus was to be blue, I decided on a blue sky. I started by laying out the colors (#1), then decided that the yellow-ish background wasn't working and removed it (#2). As I went along I worked in more blues, purples and greens into the white areas. After these I spent time on the foal then just tightening edges up.
